The 4-Step Screen Refresh

The same four steps for every screen on the house.

  1. 01

    Remove

Each screen comes off the window, so both the mesh and the glass behind it can be cleaned properly.

  2. 02

    Brush

A brush works the dust, pollen and cobwebs out of the mesh before anything wet touches it.

  3. 03

    Screen Magic

The mesh is sprayed with Screen Magic, which darkens it and visually masks sun fading.

  4. 04

    Wipe the frame

The screen frame is wiped with a microfiber towel and cleaning solution.

Screens, start to finish

Screens are part of the window. We clean them like it.

Screens are the first thing you look through and the last thing most people think to clean. They sit outside the glass all year, catching pollen, dust and bugs, and the Texas sun slowly bleaches the mesh from black to a chalky gray. Even on a freshly cleaned window, a dirty screen makes the view look hazy.

So every Berry Bros window cleaning includes your screens. Not as an upgrade or an add-on: they come off, get cleaned, and get refreshed on every visit. Here's exactly what that involves, and one honest limit worth knowing up front.

Our 4-step window screen cleaning process

Window screen cleaning is simple when it's done in the right order. Ours never changes:

  1. Take the screen off. Cleaning a screen while it's still on the window just pushes dirt into the frame and onto the glass behind it. Removing it lets us clean the mesh on its own and gives the technician clear access to the pane.
  2. Brush it down. Loose dust, pollen, cobwebs and dried bugs come off with a brush first. Getting the dry debris out before any spray goes on keeps it from turning into mud in the mesh.
  3. Spray with Screen Magic. This is the step that changes how screens look. Screen Magic refreshes the mesh: it darkens it and visually masks the gray, sun-faded look that Texas screens get. More on what it does below.
  4. Wipe the frame. The screen's frame gets wiped with a microfiber towel and cleaning solution, so a refreshed mesh isn't sitting in a dusty, water-marked frame.

While the screens are off, the glass, frames, seals and tracks behind them get cleaned too. Then each screen is set back in its window.

Screen Magic: faded to fresh, and what it won't do

Most screens on North Texas homes aren't really dirty so much as tired. Years of direct sun turn dark mesh gray and blotchy, and from the street it reads as "this house needs work." Screen Magic is a spray that darkens the mesh and visually masks that sun damage, so a faded screen looks much closer to the day it was installed. Combined with the brushing, it's a light cleaning and a cosmetic refresh in one step.

The honest limit: Screen Magic is cosmetic. It refreshes how the mesh looks. It does not repair torn mesh, patch holes, straighten bent frames or replace brittle screens. Berry Bros cleans screens; we don't repair them.

If a screen is torn, dented by hail or coming loose from its frame, we'll still clean it, and we'll point it out so you know it needs a repair shop. You won't get a surprise "screen repair" charge from us, because it isn't something we sell.

Why screens get grimy so fast around here

A screen is basically a filter stretched across your window, and North DFW gives it plenty to filter:

  • Pollen in three seasons. Mountain cedar blows in over winter, oak, elm and pecan load the air from March to May, and ragweed runs from September to the first freeze. All of it gets caught in the mesh.
  • Summer dust. Saharan dust usually drifts in around June and July and settles on everything outdoors, screens included.
  • Sun. Long, hot summers are what fade dark mesh to gray.
  • Storms. Spring storms and hail can dent and tear screens, and wind drives debris into them.

Here's the part that catches homeowners off guard: a dirty screen doesn't just look bad. When it rains, water runs through the mesh and carries that trapped dust straight down onto your clean glass. Cleaning the windows without touching the screens means the next storm can undo a good part of the work. That's a big reason screens are in every clean instead of being optional.

Included in every window cleaning, not an add-on

Screens are sometimes sold as an add-on. Not here. Every Berry Bros exterior window cleaning covers the whole window: glass, frames, seals, tracks and screens. Your quote is for the house, not a menu of extras.

That holds whether you book a one-time clean or join a service plan. On a plan, the screens are refreshed on every visit, so they never get the chance to fade and clog the way they do between once-in-a-while cleanings. Plans are discounted on every visit, and our window cleaning cost guide explains what goes into a quote.

Every clean is backed by our clean-windows guarantee. If something isn't right, call within 7 days of the appointment and we'll come back and fix it free.

How often should window screens be cleaned?

At least once a year, and ideally every time the windows are cleaned, since a dirty screen sheds onto clean glass. If you only do one cleaning a year, schedule it in late spring, after oak pollen has finished, so you're clearing out the heaviest load of the year.

Homes that open their windows in spring and fall, sit near open fields or construction, or face a lot of afternoon sun usually benefit from more frequent visits. A Quarterly or Monthly plan keeps the screens on the same rhythm as the glass.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do window cleaners clean screens?

Some do and some treat it as an add-on. At Berry Bros, screen cleaning is included in every window cleaning: each screen is removed, brushed, refreshed with Screen Magic, and its frame wiped down.

Is screen cleaning an extra charge?

No. Screens are part of the standard job along with the frames, seals and tracks. There is no separate line item for them on your quote.

Do you take the screens off?

Yes. Every screen comes off the window so the mesh can be brushed and treated on its own, and so the glass behind it can be cleaned properly.

What is Screen Magic?

A spray that refreshes window screen mesh. It darkens the mesh and visually masks sun fading, so tired gray screens look much closer to new. It is a cosmetic treatment, not a repair.

Can you fix torn or bent screens?

No. Our screen service is cleaning and a cosmetic refresh only. If we find a torn, bent or hail-damaged screen, we'll clean it and let you know it needs a repair shop.

How often should window screens be cleaned?

At least once a year, ideally every time your windows are cleaned. If you clean once a year, late spring after oak pollen season is the best time.

Why do my windows get dirty right after it rains?

Often it's the screens. Rain runs through dusty mesh and carries that dirt down onto the glass. Cleaning the screens with the windows cuts that down.

See the view, not the mesh.

Every Berry Bros window cleaning includes your screens, removed, brushed and refreshed.
